A WOMEN’S DRUM JAM AND DANCE WORKSHOP

 

(New York, NY ) BAAD! - The Bronx Academy of Arts & Dance presents BAAD! ASS WOMEN 2010, its annual cultural festival celebrating the empowerment of women through art, culture and performance. The festival opens on Thursday, March 11, 2010 with the stirring documentary ANTONIO PANTOJA: PRESENTE! celebrating the life of the dynamic founder of the ASPIRA educational program and a quintessential BAAD!Ass Woman. The festival will continue through April 3 with dance, theatre, film and music. The events will be held at BAAD!, 841 Barretto Street in the South Bronx. Ticket prices vary from free to $20. Participants can take advantage of the Five for $5 special (you and four “girlfriends” make a group of five and pay only $5 each with a prior reservation.)  BAAD! offers discounts to BAADGE cardholders and Bronx Cultural Card holders. Ticket offers cannot

be combined.

Antonia Pantoja: Presente!

Filmmaker Lillian Jimenez will be joined by Antonia Pantoja’s life partner Dr. Mina Perry for this screening of Antonia Pantoja: Presente!  This stirring documentary tells the story of educator/organizer Antonia Pantoja, founder of the New York-based education and advocacy organization, Aspira and a champion of Puerto Rican "immigrant-citizens." Through passionate personal testimony, never-before-seen home movies and archival footage, the life of the passionate, indomitable leader unfolds.

Sharon Bridgforth, Rha Goddess and Zera Priestess

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to witness powerhouse poet/performers who’ll deliver unforgettable theatrical experiences.  Bridgforth, a writer working in the theatrical jazz aesthetic presents Like Jazz, a collection of jazz/blues/prayer poems & performance stories. Rha Goddess presents an excerpt of her acclaimed show Low.  Her style is so unique that it warrants its own one-word description, "Floetry," a phrase she coined which is a blending of rhythm, poetry, hip-hop and politics.  Adding some Bronx flava is the one and only Zera Priestess, a poet, singer, actress and editor of the upcoming SoulSWEET Sanctuary Love is Life is Love Anthology.

Powerful Dance Doc from Trinidad and Tobago

Julia and Joyce: Two Stories of Two Dance Pioneers

The dance history of Trinidad and Tobago, and its local and global impact, is brought to the fore through the eyes of two local dance legends - Julia Edwards and Joyce Kirton in this documentary by Sonja Dumas.  Julia and Joyce have collectively contributed over 110 years of dedication and work. They have been instrumental in the preservation and innovation of countless traditional dance forms.  Their impact can be seen in the many dancers and choreographers of the generations that have come after them.  Co-presented with the Dance Film Assocation.

Bronx Choreographer Premieres Work

Jessica Danser/Dansfolk presents

Some Very Good Years: An Evening of Contemporary Dance

Award-winning Bronx choreographer, Jessica Danser, premieres mixtape for some pretty good years,” a celebration of young womanhood during the hip hop generation created through a series of workshops with young women from the Odyssey House in Hunts Point, and “Sensitive Female Chord Progression,” a solo by Ms. Danser with original music composed by Haitian-American guitarist Karl Schwarz.  The evening will also include Danser’s “The Opposite of War,” (2009), a dance which incorporates stage combat, krumping, and Graham-infused contemporary dance with a soundscore spanning 40 years of popular protest-themed music.

For the last 10 years, the compilation dance concert at the BAAD!Ass Women Festival has been a highlight showcasing an exciting and diverse line-up of choreographers and a magnificent mix of contemporary dance forms.  This year’s artists include Marjani Forté, Ingrid Graham, Sue Hogan & Heather Sakima, MAWU, Sari Nordman, Noelle Phillips, Jule Jo Ramirez,  Jessica St. Vil-Ulysse and Zoe!

Drama and Laughter!

Carmelita Tropicana and Carolyn Ritteray

Strap yourself down for a night of thrilling theater and luscious laughter when award-winning performer Carmelita Tropicana presents Cucaracha, about a cockroach ruminating on Cuban politics and Elian Gonzalez and actress/performer Carolyn Ritteray, who as the NY Times has called ‘breathtaking,’ brings her one woman tour de force, Insta-Bliss.

MIX NYC presents HOME

Mix NYC Experimental Queer Festival curates this collection of short films and videos. In our larger culture, women are charged with sustaining the home. For queer people, home could include a wide array of places including a home created with a chosen family, a community or even a nation. Home is impacted by both political factors and small private moments. This collection, curated by Rocko Bulldagger, looks at the city, the intimacy of shared living spaces and the internal emotional landscape of home.  With Changing House by Zave Martohardhojono, Cusps by Sara Zia Ebrahimi and Cash Free by EE Miller with Bernadine Mellis.

This not to be missed evening features 4 amazing singers and musical acts including the international One World Beat and trombonist Toli Nameless; the Bronx’s vocal powerhouse, Lah Tere, delivers a socially-conscious , thumpin’ hip hop laced set; the mighty and seductive jazz stylings of Chaney Sims;  and back by popular demand, the Ganessa James Trio infuses its soulful sound with a rock edge.

Yoga with Shizu Homma

Everybody is welcome to open level vinyasa, meaning participants will get a flow workout for your mind and body, and adjust to their own pace in a noncompetitive atmosphere. Shizu Homma is a Yoga Alliance registered, Core-Strength Vinyasa Flow certified yoga instructor.  She has been practicing yoga for about 12 years, has been teaching since November 2005.  RSVP required.  Arrive early.

 

Wednesdays – March 10, 17, 24 &31 – Drumming Jam from 6:30-7:30 Afro-Caribbean Dance from 7:30-9:30 / Free will donation

Women’s Drumming Jam and Afro-Caribbean Dance Class presented by Retumba!

Don’t miss the unique experience to the join Yvette Martinez and Nancy Friedman, the artistic directors of the acclaimed Retumba!, in this is all women drum circle and jam (from 6:30 -7:30pm) followed by an all-out Afro-Caribbean Dance Class (at 7:30pm) where each week a different region of the Caribbean will be celebrated – Cuba, Haiti, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.  Participants are encouraged to bring drums and dancers should bring long wide skirts.

 

Saturdays, - March 13, 20 & 27 from 9:30- 11am/$7 per class

Capoeira Dance with “Bronx” and Sasha of Ginga Mundo

Bronx native Moses McCarter and his wife Sasha McCarter lead a class for dancers of all levels in this amazing folk dance that ritualizes movement from martial arts, African dance and acrobatics. Guaranteed to get your blood pumping and your body moving.

 

Crowned “a funky and welcoming performance space” by The New York Times , BAAD! is a 70 seat workshop and performance space that presents cutting-edge and challenging works by established, evolving and emerging choreographers, playwrights, poets, musicians and artists that are empowering to women, people of color and the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) communities.
